February is among us, and here in Saskatoon we’ve been saying hello and goodbye and hello again and goodbye again to springtime weather. When I’m getting ready for my walk to work, I’ve been assessing the risk-benefit ratio of wearing my extremely slippery rubber boots. I have yet to soak my socks or fall and embarrass myself, so I’ve got a perfect track record so far. I don’t count the two times I’ve turned around after walking half a block because I’ve changed my mind.

Here at CFCR headquarters we’ve been getting ready for February 13, which is the day of our FeBREWary social night and World Radio Day. Come celebrate the process of transmitting modulated electromagnetic waves to be received as sound messages with us!

FeBREWary

CFCR 90.5FM, Saskatoon Community Radio presents the return of the FeBREWary Friday Social – a night spotlighting superb Saskatchewan craft-brewed beverages, great pizza, and the finest of music!

Join us for this event on Friday, February 13, 2026 at The Venue at McLean Block (265 3rd Avenue South, located at the street level of the CFCR World Headquarters building)! The event runs from 5-11pm, and all ages are welcome until 8pm!

This thirst-quenching evening will feature a wide array of delicious drinks, all made right here in Saskatchewan.

Not a beer drinker? No problem! We’ll have selections of wine, cocktails and cider from Wolf Willow Winery & Spot On Cidery.

Not an alcohol drinker? Also no problem! We’ll have non-alcoholic beer from Malty National, non-alcoholic wine cocktails from Wolf Willow, and CYBRPUNK Craft Sodas in a variety of flavours for your sipping satisfaction. We’ll also have our own signature CFCR craft water (patent pending) on-site, so you can make sure you keep the party well-hydrated.

And what goes better with delicious craft drinks than pizza? Be sure to purchase a slice (or 10), courtesy of our friends at Santa Lucia Pizza!

The entertainment for the evening will be provided by CFCR DJs Charly Hustle (Wednesday Hot Buttered Soul), Drewski (Monday Hot Buttered Soul), and Brenda Machine (Hysterio!), spinning all kinds of jams to get your toes tapping. We’ll also have pinball from our friends at Pokey’s Pinball Café, and other fun barroom games.

Entry is FREE at the door. This is a licensed all-ages event (all-ages from 5-8pm), and a valid Government photo ID is required at the door for liquor sales. Drink/Food tickets will be sold on-site!

To help FeBREWary 2026 attendees get home safe, discount vouchers from RIIDE YXE will be available by request (for departures from the event only). Voucher information will be posted at the venue. Visit riide.ca and download the app today.

World Radio Day

UNESCO (the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) declared February 13 World Radio Day in 2011 and the day was adopted by the United Nations General Assembly in 2012.

Radio Facts & Stats

The first radio communication, which sent morse code, was in 1895. Radio waves first transmitted voice and music signals in December 1906. Canadian Reginald Fessenden produced about an hour of music and talk content while broadcasting out of Massachusetts. A thorough breakdown of the history of radio can be found on Britannica.com.

According to Numeris, Canadians listened to more radio in Fall 2025 than Fall 2024. Radio reaches 81% of Canadians every week, and people are listening to about 8 hours a week, a 4% increase from the previous year!

Last World Radio Day, World Radio Alliance and EGTA published research that compiled data from multiple sources. They found that radio is listened to more minutes of the day than owned music, music streaming, podcasts, online music videos, or other. In 8 out of the 9 countries surveyed, radio was listened to more than all those other mediums combined. The research shows radio is the most trusted type of media — people tend to rate their trust in radio higher than their trust in television, websites, or online social networks.

The most listened to radio show worldwide is Voice of America. In 2022 VOA had 326 million weekly listeners across platforms and languages!

There are over 1,100 licensed radio stations in Canada and about 235 of those are not-for-profit community or campus radio stations. There are about 190 radio stations in Saskatchewan and 16 located in Saskatoon. There are 59 community stations in Saskatchewan, of which 44 are First Nations community radio station. The only place I could find local numbers was on the Wikipedia page “List of radio stations in Saskatchewan”, so if anyone wants to do a deep dive confirming these stats and report back to me, I’d thank you for having more free time than I do.

And the final fact of the day: CFCR remains your favorite (and only) community radio station in Saskatoon.

Community Connect

Global Gathering Place (GGP) is a drop-in not-for-profit centre that provides personalized, heartfelt settlement assistance to refugees and immigrants. A welcoming home away from home they act as a cultural bridge between newcomers and life in Canada.

They provide so many amazing services, resources, and programs such as one-on-one support for newcomers, English classes, events that facilitate social connections, skill-building programs, and much more!

Along with directly supporting newcomers, they also work with the Saskatoon community at large to remind us all about our shared responsibility in helping newcomers integrate and thrive. They offer guidance for making local services more inclusive and accessible, and advocate for what we know to be true: that immigrants and refugees, when given the opportunity, make valuable contributions to all aspects of Canadian society.
