Hi folks and welcome to the July edition of Frequency Modulation! This time around we bring you Adventures in Managing — a new mainstay segment of Frequency Modulation wherein Joe, our general manager, recaps his last month here at CFCR.
At CFCR some roles have a bit of an appreciated summer lull after the Membership Drive wraps up. It’s a wonderful opportunity to catch up on tasks and get in some summer cleaning. It never lasts long, though, as FM-Phasis preparations are already well underway. Now remember, in the words of the great Craig Northey: “You think there’s not a lot goin’ on / But look closer baby, you’re so wrong”.
Adventures in Managing
People & Shows
There are so many great people playing such great music every day on CFCR. I’ve been a regular listener for years, but now as GM, I’m paying closer attention to the people whose creativity and musical taste bring CFCR to life. Big shout-out this month to Jason on The Buzz, Sarah on The Disco Before the Breakdown, and Rochelle on the Swing Shift. Great shows, y’all!

Backstage Pass
As you may have heard, we’re making moves behind the scenes to keep the station humming. These changes include routing our signal through a new tower and replacing failing equipment. Special thanks to Tyler from Pippin Technical and to Nathan and his team at WDit for always taking such good care of CFCR.

Pride
I marched in my first-ever Pride Parade with a crew of CFCR staff, volunteers, and supporters. We had fun, saw so many friends along the route, and gave out stacks of CFCR stickers!

Jazz Fest Voiceovers
In another first, I recorded a handful of announcements to be played over the PA at Jazz Fest. A big thanks to Inari, CFCR’s Production Manager, for helping put it all together. She’s so great at what she does!

Spring Clean in July
We’re making room for something new. Stay tuned.

Thanks for reading, and say hi next time you’re at the station,
Joe
In Memoriam: Brian “The Captain” Penner

We are extremely saddened and in shock at the loss of our good bud, fellow volunteer host and champion of Community Radio, Brian “The Captain” Penner.
The Captain appeared like a bolt of lightning, hosting Pirate Radio from the very early days of CFCR, bringing listeners a healthy dose of rockin’ tunes, cool quips, and sweet interviews with up-and-coming bands.
Brian had the most eclectic taste in music, always keeping his ears perked to the latest and greatest. Brian was a frequent fixture at live shows, and always came armed with his famous air guitar anytime a killer riff came about, along with his infectious laugh and big smile. Once you met The Captain, you just knew you were going to be friends forever.
Brian will be dearly missed, not only by his wonderful family (Tracy & Amelia) and friends, but by everyone at CFCR, and anyone lucky enough to cross paths with this true legend.
In honour of The Captain, remember to always keep the tunes cranked, and keep on rockin’ out!
In lieu of flowers, Brian’s family has generously requested that donations in his memory may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation (heartandstroke.ca/donations), or to CFCR 90.5 FM Community Radio (cfcr.ca/donate). Your contributions in his name would mean a great deal.
Album of the Month
Froese reflects on a strange time of her life on Solitary Songs. Her brilliant songwriting pulls you into her emotional states and brings along as she processes complicated feelings and experiences.
